East Asia
Greenhouse, Phase 3
EMI Project 5460
Mid to late March (2 week trip), 2008
Original Project Scope
This team will be working on the third phase of a greenhouse project in East Asia. Greenhouses are very common in this part of the world, but very few are used year around, without any additional heat (except solar gain), i.e. a stand alone and sustainable greenhouse. Our goal is to finalize our R & D greenhouses and develop a "kit" that can be shipped.
We presently have four greenhouses built (also in East Asia), plus we have a researcher (from our June EMI team) that has been collecting weather, temperature data and much more throughout the winter of 2007- 2008. We'll be working closing with the field personal using the data, plus improved design changes from the control greenhouse to come up with this next generation we'll call the Gamma model.
This is not the typical eMi project, but one that is unique and still meets a critical need. The greenhouse will be used to feed around 100 orphans and others in need. We'll need to complete almost all of our work in country, as the ministry wants to start construction by early summer for an "on the farm model" and then start shipping "kit greenhouses "to a distant site in early fall (because of early freezing temperatures.) We'll need a small but full team to finish the design on this important project. Come be a part that will change people's lives forever.
Note - this project has a very short fuse, to stay on track with an existing timetable; our work needs to be 80% finished in country. Any remaining work will then need to be done by the 21st of April!
Future Need
Assistant to Researcher - would provide full time assistance to the researcher starting in July of 2008. This would be a volunteer position, must be able to speak English and Mandarin, plus speaking Korea would be a useful. This person must be a good team player, have past greenhouse and /or farming (with plant science experience.) It would be good timing if this person was part of this design team. There are still a lot of details to be worked out with this position.
