Inside of home - interior walls create three rooms for efficient living.

Project Scope
The basic house (a large shed by American standards but may house 6-8 people) is 5x6 meters or 16’x20’ with a 5’ covered porch. It does not include interior walls and costs about $1,500 or $4.70 per ft². The design constraints for the casita were cultural acceptability, low cost, and construction speed and ease. The foundation is made of 6 pre-cast piers with concrete U blocks which will be filled with concrete. The price includes cement and sand to make a soil cement floor. The wall and roof structure are 2½”metal studs with 1½” of rigid insulation between them. The exterior walls will be wrapped with metal lath followed by ¾” stucco on both sides. The stucco is important because it will have the appearance of finished block, block being the material of choice in Central America, but this system will be much faster to build than block. The stucco application is simple- very common in Guatemala will be the homeowners contribution to his home. Delta Rib style metal roofing covers the house. The basic house includes an entry door and 4 windows.

An extra $220 provided interior walls with stucco on one side to create 3 rooms. $150 adds a latrine, $110 adds an efficient wood cook stove (utilizing 70% less fuel than an open fire typically used), and $50 adds a gravity flow water filter.

We estimate the time of construction to be 2 days per house without the stucco application.

Outside of home - will house a family of 6-8 people.
