Project Scope
The city of Juba is the capital of Southern Sudan, a semi-autonomous region still recovering from the effects of a civil war that officially ended in 2005. Orphaned boys and girls face serious challenges in post-war Sudan. Boys often become involved in substance abuse and crime, while girls often turn to prostitution to earn survival income. Living Water Ministries (LWM) established a boys’ orphanage in Juba in 2002 and has now purchased 2.5 acres of land to establish a girls’ orphanage. LWM is also involved in other areas of Sudan. A 8 acre campus in another area of Sudan is the location for a strategic training center which equips young church leaders in the Scriptures as well as providing them with vocational skills so they can support themselves as they go out to share the Good News to unreached areas of Sudan.
At the Girls’ Orphanage site, LWM is ready to proceed with the masterplan design as well as the schematic design of the first buildings which will be the Dining Hall / Chapel and Dormitory for the orphanage as well as a small Health Clinic to serve the local community. This forward-thinking ministry is also actively exploring new “green technologies” such as earth-bag construction for some of the structures at the Girls’ Orphanage. At the 8 acre training center campus, LWM would also like to create a long-range Architectural Masterplan to make the best use of their land. In addition to the existing spiritual and vocational training center for church leaders, they envision facilities such as sports fields, a swimming pool, agricultural fields, and a small area for retreats on the site.
EMI will be sending a team to Juba to work on the design of the two sites. The entire team will work together to produce a masterplan and schematic building designs for the Girls’ Orphanage site in Juba. Also, the architect(s) will produce a masterplan for the 8 acre training center site that incorporates the proposed activities into the current activities based on existing drawings of the site.
The team will be hosted at the LWM boys’ orphanage which is just a few miles from the girls’ orphanage site. There will be opportunities to interact with the boys living at the orphanage as well as to learn what has worked well at that site and what can be improved while working on the design of the girls’ orphanage site.
Please consider joining this team and extending the love of Christ to young orphan girls in Juba and helping LWM expand the impact of their training center site.
