Original Project Scope
In 2005 Sudan entered a season of peace after more than two decades of civil war. While the majority of Southern Sudanese people are Christian, they have suffered severe persecution for their faith. The aftermath of the war has left the area devastated, including a severely crippled infrastructure and lack of education programs for children. Rebuild Sudan was born out of a desire to help the children of Southern Sudan have access to the education they need to combat the sometimes life-threatening situations of persecution, poverty, and disease which they face on a daily basis. The founder of Rebuild Sudan, Michael Kuany, is one of the "Lost Boys of Sudan", a group of tens of thousands of boys who fled the attacks by the Arab militias in the 1980s, miraculously survived two thousand-mile journeys without food or water through the African savannah, and spent their childhoods in two refugee camps - first in Ethiopia and finally in Kenya. Returning to his homeland in 2007, Michael was inspired with the desire to serve the children who are returning with their families to this devastated region. Rebuild Sudan has acquired a site of approximately two acres and will construct an eight classroom school to serve 400 children with an education. Do you enjoy "roughing it" a little bit?
