Sierra Leone (Freetown)
FIRST STEP Special Economic Zone
Master Plan
World Hope International
EMI Project 5504
February 18 - 28, 2010
Original Project Scope
The FIRST STEP project began with a discussion between World Hope International's CEO and the President of Sierra Leone to try to develop job and income creation in Sierra Leone, one of the poorest countries on the globe. The Special Economic Zone will be located on the 54 acres of land which has been deeded by the government. International firms will be able to easily locate labor intensive aspects of their global production chains without significant up-front costs or risks. Raw materials and necessary equipment will be imported into the zone by the firms and they will add Sierra Leonean labor, locally available raw materials, and then export the finished products. The Sierra Leonean workers of Partner Firms will participate in training programs for a few hours a week covering basic concerns such as HIV/AIDS awareness, health, nutrition, adult literacy, and skills development. Partner firms will be recruited from church-based business groups who will have believers based in-country working among the poor and informally living out their faith.
The EMI team will develop a master plan, plans for the FIRST STEP offices, a conference/training center, and also general infrastructure to support the initial factory shells that will be built on the first two 5-acre plots. Come and be part of this exciting pioneering effort to create jobs for the poorest of the poor.
