My Story
I grew up in Houston, TX became a Christian through the youth ministry of First Presbyterian Church. When thinking about colleges, I really wanted to pick a place that had a different climate then Houston – so I went to upstate New York (where the winters are long). A lot of pivotal things happen in college – the biggest for me was meeting my wife to be, Erika. I was also involved in Campus Crusade for Christ and learned how to share my faith and lead by bible studies. After graduating from Cornell, I moved to southern Mississippi to take care of my grandfather and start my career. After a couple of months of living and working there, I got a call out of the blue from a guy who was going on staff with EMI and had just met my youth director in Houston. He thought I might be interested in hearing about it – and he was right! I did an internship with EMI in the spring of 1998. At the end of the internship, I felt that I really need to gain some professional experience before I could offer professional services to gospel workers. I moved to Washington, DC and started working for a construction company as a project engineer. Erika also moved to the DC area and we were married two years later. After five years of construction management experience and passing the PE test, Erika and I decided that we should look at serving with EMI (Erika is a landscape architect and also works with EMI using her professional skills). What we found was a ministry that so matched our skills and desires – as we like to say “it just fits.”

Professional Training and Experience
BS in civil engineering from Cornell University (1997). I started my career working in New Orleans for a multi-discipline firm that designed most industrial projects like off-shore platforms and mining facilities. After a 5 month internship with EMI in 1998, I moved to Washington, DC and started working for Centex Construction Company. I worked for 6 years on various construction projects as a project manager and superintendent and even got to help with some preconstruction project reviews. During that time, I also passed the Practices of Engineering exam to obtain my PE license in Maryland. Erika and I came to EMI in September of 2004 – me as the construction management director and Erika as a staff landscape architect.

Ministry Experience
I enjoyed many short term trips in high school and was very active in Campus Crusade for Christ in college. I am a strong believer in the power of short term trips to impact a community and (almost as importantly) change the volunteers forever. Including my trip to Liberia in May 2005, I have been on 6 EMI short term trips.

If God told me to live long term in a cross-cultural setting, the country I would chose...
I really have no preferences, having enjoyed all the cultures that I’ve traveled to so far.

Verses to Live By
Romans 12:1-2 “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
