My Story
Growing up in a military family, I was extremely self-reliant. I was a smart kid who thought he could take on the world, all on his own. To me, religion was a crutch that stupid people relied on to explain the things that scientists and mathematicians had subsequently figured out. It wasn’t until college when I realized that a faith in God could be built on understanding and logic. I also came to understand how completely and utterly broken I was without a savior. I accepted Christ into my life on a dark, cold, bench in Pennsylvania in the gently falling snow.
Since that time, I’ve come to understand that, as big as God is, he still offers me the opportunity to be involved in His grand plan. He can use my meager skills as an engineer to reach out to the poorest of the poor all over the world. He wants to use me to help reconcile a fallen world to a perfect God.

Born: Aug 30, 1975
Years at EMI: After six years as a volunteer, 2006 is my first year on staff!
Family
I married my beautiful bride, Laura, on September 2nd, 2000. We have two dogs: an Australian cattle-dog mutt, and a speckled miniature dachshund.
Professional Training and Experience
I have bachelors degrees in mechanical engineering and mathematics from Duke University. After four exciting years in the U.S. Army 10th Mountain Division as a combat engineer, I worked for an environmental and infrastructure engineering firm, Earth Tech. I attained professional engineer certification as a civil engineer with a focus on water resources in 2003.
Ministry Experience
God changed my life during my first EMI trip to Haiti in 2000 when He showed me what true poverty was. Then and there, he gave me a heart for the poor and the lost. Since then, I’ve traveled with EMI to three continents and seen God at work in the far corners of the world. After wrestling with God’s calling in my life for five years, I applied to the full-time staff of EMI in 2005 and was invited to join later that year. I’m extremely excited to see what God will do in this next phase of my life.
If God told me to live long term in a cross-cultural setting, the country I would chose...
I’ve left my heart in many countries, but Ethiopia touched me especially deeply. There are still tribes there that have never heard the good news of salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Poverty, sickness, and disease in that country are prevalent, so there are incredible opportunities to show God’s love in practical ways.
Verses to Live By
Isaiah 40:12-14
Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand and marked off the heavens with a span, enclosed the dust of the earth in a measure and weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance? Who has measured the Spirit of the Lord, or what man shows him his counsel? Whom did he consult, and who made him understand? Who taught him the path of justice, and taught him knowledge, and showed him the way of understanding?
Isaiah 58:10-12
…And if you spend yourselves on behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday. The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail. Your people will raise up the age-old foundations; you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.
